Starting January 1, 2025, CMS expanded ALS2 reimbursement criteria to include prehospital blood transfusions (PHBT). PHBT includes the administration of:
Low titer O+ and O- whole blood (WBT);
Packed red blood cells (PRBCs);
Plasma; or
A combination of PRBCs and plasma.
This change brings the procedures that qualify for ALS2 from seven to eight. Under the change, a ground ambulance transport that provides PHBT would constitute an ALS2-level transport.
